New Year. New Systems. Same Purpose.

There’s just something about the start of a new school year.

The hallways start coming back to life. Teachers are getting classrooms ready. Coaches are starting practices. Families are trying to figure out schedules, school supplies and everything else that comes with August. And if you’ve spent any amount of time working in a school, you also know that likely somewhere in the building somebody is trying to solve a problem they never saw coming.

That’s just part of it.

This year, many North Dakota schools have had something else added to the list with the transition from PowerSchool to Infinite Campus. From what I’ve heard it hasn’t been perfect, and I’m certain there have been more than a few frustrating moments along the way.

Administrators, teachers, office staff, counselors and technology teams have all been learning something new while still trying to do everything else it takes to get a school year started. Things that used to be second nature might take a little longer right now. There are questions. There are frustrations. But there is also a lot of work happening behind the scenes to figure it all out.

And schools are pretty good at figuring things out.

I spent many years working in education, and if there is one thing I know about schools, it’s that they adapt. They must. What feels difficult or unfamiliar today eventually becomes part of the routine, and then another challenge comes along.

In a lot of ways, the same thing is true of our school buildings.

Educational facilities should never become obstacles to the work happening inside them.

A school building should help people do their jobs. It should help teachers teach and kids learn. It should give students places to work together and places to find a little quiet when they need it. It should be able to change because education is always changing.

Programs change. Technology changes. Teaching changes. Most importantly, the needs of kids change.

That’s why we at ICON believe the best conversations about school facilities start with listening. Talk to the teachers who spend every day in those classrooms. Talk to the students who know where they like to gather and where they don’t. Talk to the custodians, coaches, secretaries, administrators and community members who know the building better than anyone.

Ask what works. Ask what doesn’t. Ask what they wish they had. Then listen.

Because at the end of the day, schools aren’t really about software, furniture, walls or floor plans. They’re about the people inside them.

They’re about the teacher greeting kids at the door every morning. The student who finally finds something they are good at. The coach who stays late. The secretary who somehow knows just about everything going on in the building. The custodian who takes pride in making the school look its best. They’re about the friendships, successes, struggles and little moments that happen every single day.

There will be new systems to learn this year. There will be things that don’t work exactly the way we hoped they would. There always are.

But soon the hallways will be full again, and the focus will get back to where it belongs.

The kids.

Systems will change. Buildings will change. Education will continue to change.

The reason we do the work hasn’t.
