The University of North Dakota experienced an increased interest in Esports as a collegiate sport and extracurricular activity throughout their student population. With the growing interest, the University prioritized the need for space for a new program and sport. There was also an opportunity to revitalize an underutilized space in Swanson Hall, that had been previously used as storage or not at all.

The Esports area will feature three separate gaming areas, one each for practice, competition, and classroom purposes. The space will have glazing along the public corridor to allow for strong visibility and public viewing. Swanson Hall is connected to Memorial Union and the parking structure, offering easier access to the Esports area.
